Aftercare

Congratulations on your new tattoo! To ensure that your tattoo heals properly and looks its best, it's essential to follow these aftercare instructions carefully.

1. Leave the bandage on for the recommended time: If the tattoo is covered with plastic wrap leave it on for 2-4 hours.  If using a clear adhesive barrier, such a Second Skin, you may leave it on for 3-5 days.  If the bandage becomes compromised such as having leakage or it peels up exposing the tattoo, you will need to remove the bandage and continue the aftercare as listed below.  If you notice redness or a possible reaction to the bandage, remove it immediately and wash your tattoo.

2. Gently wash the tattoo with mild soap and water: Always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching your tattoo.  Use lukewarm water and a mild antibacterial soap such as Dial to remove the bandage and gently cleanse your tattoo. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the tattoo excessively.  Lightly pat it dry with a clean paper towel.

3. Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion: Using a clean hand, apply a thin layer of fragrance free lotion.  We recommend Hustle Butter.  Other suitable lotions are Curél, Lubriderm, or Aquaphor.  Apply the lotion 2-3 times a day until the tattoo is fully healed.  Proper hydration is crucial for tattoo healing. Ensure the tattoo stays moisturized but not overly greasy. Don't let it dry out or crack.

4. Avoid picking, scratching, or peeling the tattoo: Resist the temptation to pick or scratch the tattoo, as it can damage the healing skin and affect the final appearance of your tattoo.

5. Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds: During the healing process and beyond, protect your tattoo from the sun's harmful UV rays.  If you expose it to sunlight after the tattoo is healed, use sunblock with a high SPF.

6. Avoid swimming or soaking the tattoo: Keep your tattoo away from pools, hot tubs, and long baths during the healing process. Avoid submerging it in water to prevent infection.

7. Wear clean, breathable clothing: Choose loose-fitting, soft clothing to avoid irritation to the tattooed area. Make sure your clothes are clean and don't rub against the tattoo.

8. Avoid excessive physical activity: During the initial healing period, avoid strenuous workouts and activities that could cause excessive sweating or friction on the tattoo.

Healing times vary from person to person, but in general, it takes about 2-4 weeks for a tattoo to fully heal.  If you notice any signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, pus, or prolonged pain, contact your healthcare professional.
